Over the years, Barrio Egipto has been labeled one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Bogotá, with rates of gang violence, robbery and homicide that exceed those of the rest of the city. In the midst of this violence, the women of the neighborhood face a harsh reality: many have a son, a husband or a father in prison or murdered.

These women must take on full responsibility for their families, carrying the emotional, economic and social weight of a devastating situation, which places them in a condition of high vulnerability.

Through the "Tejiendo Corazones" workshop, Fundación Buena Semilla offers these women an opportunity to find emotional and spiritual healing. The workshop also teaches them the craft of weaving on manual looms, giving them the tools they need to start a business that generates income within their own community.

Since 2018, Fundación Buena Semilla has run an urban organic garden as an educational strategy to teach the principles of agriculture to children and the wider community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we understood how important urban agriculture is for food self-sufficiency.

In the garden, children learn to build seedbeds, plant, harvest and apply greenhouse and hydroponic growing principles. They are also taught composting, vermiculture and beekeeping techniques. The garden also supplies vegetables for the children's dining hall at Casa Buena Semilla.

In the San Bruno alley and the Carretero area of Barrio Egipto, most dwellings are in precarious conditions, similar to favelas or slums. These homes lack minimum habitability requirements and suffer serious problems such as leaks, water seepage, and deficiencies in their foundations and structure.

Through the "Nehemiah" project, Fundación Buena Semilla works to transform these dwellings from subhuman conditions into dignified homes, with the collaboration of the beneficiaries themselves, volunteers and allies who donate resources or materials.
